I clearly remember both feelings of anxiety and excitement at the thought of being more independent and moving on from my life in a big town like Cheltenham and leaving sleepy Cornwall behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>&#8220;You&#8217;ll never find peace of mind until you listen to your heart<\/p><cite>George Michael<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Deadlines. Debt. Homesickness. Social anxiety. Identity questions. The weight of expectation\u2014both internal and external\u2014can build quietly until it starts to affect your sleep, your relationships, and your sense of self.  I certainly felt a lot of pressure to hit the ground running when I arrived in my student digs; pressure to make a good impression with flatmates and fellow students.  I remember finding simple things such as where should I do my shopping and how will I make sure I eat healthily enough to not get some awful disease quite overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This guide is for the student who\u2019s feeling lost in the noise (like I was). The one who\u2019s questioning whether they belong. You\u2019re often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Living away from home for the first time<\/li><li>Managing finances, food, and friendships<\/li><li>Navigating new identities and beliefs<\/li><li>Facing academic pressure and performance anxiety<\/li><li>Meeting lots of new people<\/li><li>Adapting to a town or city you might not know very well<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a lot. And yet, many students feel they have to \u201cjust get on with it.\u201d That asking for help is weakness. That struggling means they\u2019re failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me say this clearly: it doesn\u2019t.  Treat getting support from your tutor, lecturer or even a counsellor like me as important as attending lectures, handing in assignments on time and sitting exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Struggle is part of growth. And support is part of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Technique 1: The \u201cMicro-Moment\u201d Method<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When everything feels overwhelming, zoom in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of trying to fix your whole life, focus on one small moment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Make your bed<\/li><li>Drink a glass of water<\/li><li>Step outside for 2 minutes<\/li><li>Text a friend \u201cthinking of you\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These micro-moments help regulate your nervous system and build momentum. They\u2019re not trivial\u2014they\u2019re foundational.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u00a0&#8220;<em>If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><cite><em>Martin Luther King, Jr.\u00a0<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2>Technique 2: The \u201cPermission Slip\u201d Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Write yourself a permission slip. Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI give myself permission to rest.\u201d \u201cI give myself permission to not know everything.\u201d \u201cI give myself permission to feel sad today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This simple act can reduce shame and increase self-compassion. It\u2019s a tool I often use in therapy sessions with students who feel trapped by perfectionism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Technique 3: The \u201cBelonging Inventory\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>University can trigger deep questions about identity and belonging. Try this journaling prompt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Where do I feel most like myself?<\/li><li>Who makes me feel safe?<\/li><li>What spaces energise me?<\/li><li>What beliefs no longer fit?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This inventory helps you reconnect with your values and find your people. It\u2019s not about ignoring stress\u2014it\u2019s about interrupting its momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Technique 5: The \u201cConnection Ritual\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Loneliness is one of the most common struggles at university. Create a weekly ritual that fosters connection:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>A walk with a flatmate<\/li><li>A call to someone back home<\/li><li>A shared meal with coursemates<\/li><li>A club or society meetup<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to be extroverted. That\u2019s okay. That\u2019s human.  Afterall, just because we&#8217;ve left friends, family and familiarity behind, it doesn&#8217;t mean problems  we had before we enrolled are left behind too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Counselling offers a safe, confidential space to explore these layers. Whether you\u2019re dealing with academic burnout, relationship strain, or emotional overwhelm, support is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a counsellor, I work with students across Cornwall and online to help them find clarity, confidence, and calm. Surviving university doesn&#8217;t have to a slog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you try the micro-moment method, write yourself a permission slip, or reach out for counselling, know this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not alone. You\u2019re not failing.
